PreAP classes are designed for students who desire a rigorous, advanced curriculum that is reading and writing intensive. Beyond the assignments of regular science classes, PreAP students can expect essay assessments; independent projects, papers, and reports; and outside reading assignments. These assignments will among those that make up 60% of the PreAP student’s final grade. The emphasis is on developing critical thinking skills and preparation for the AP exams. Successful PreAP students will be high achievers with excellent work ethics who have exhibited above average proficiency in basic skills. They are typically task-oriented and able to set priorities with regard to time and responsibilities. Parental support also plays a key role in the success of these students.

Students in PreAP science who do not turn in assignments the day they are due will find themselves falling quickly behind, increasing the risk of failure. District policy states 60% of the PreAP students’ final report card grade will be based upon summative assessments (tests, checkpoints, projects, presentations, papers, reports, etc.) and 40% of the grade will be based upon formative assessments (class discussions, daily practice, homework, teacher observation, etc.).
